Hutt Art Class – Suzani Bird Too

Traditional Suzani Embroidery in Uzbekistan has flourished again since the fall of the Soviet Union. Taking inspirations from a contemporary Suzani, this bird with flowers and leaves has been reinterpreted using crewel embroidery stiches.

This Suzani bird is designed to be a companion to last year’s bird, You can either do the new design, a bird with attitude taken from a Suzani embroidery (is this where Dr Suess got his ideas from?) or the smaller Suzani Bird from 2024.

In this class you will learn a number of crewel stitches with Strand yarn.

The $30 design pack will include a printed linen/cotton panel of the design, a suggested stitch and color layout and a stitch dictionary.

At the end of the class you will be given detailed stitching instruction

A Strand wool pack containing the colours used will be available in class. Prices will be different depending which design you choose to do.

Designed by Mary Self I come from South Taranaki where the trees are all windswept in one direction so this is a celebration of the effect of mother nature. The stitches used are blanket stitch, lazy daisy, split stitch, running stitch and French knots. In the following set of instructions we have described the threads and stitches that we used in our sample. However, please feel free to use other threads and your favourite stitches. This is freestyle embroidery and by varying the methods you use, your embroidery will become unique. The outlines of the leaves, branches and trunks are stitched for you to embroider and embellish as you wish.
