60s Puffs Still Life

Quilted Textile Work One in a series of Still Life panels of vases and flowers. Pink, Orange and green suffolk puffs made from 1960s fabrics are the flowers and leaves in an appliqued peach coloured damask fabric vase on an kantha stitched linen/cotton mix background. The "flowers" are recycled from Sam and Sally Scarecrow, made by Great Aunt Nellie and me from an English Women's Weekly pattern by Jean Greenhowe in the 1960s. The heads were not quite right, we used nylon stockings. The elastic has now gone in the arms and legs and Sally has lost a leg. My children didn't really like them and even the dog is not interested in playing. And then I have just realized what treasures I have... many Suffolk Puffs made from genuine 1960s fabrics that were off cuts from a local clothing factory. They had been given to the local church guild to make things for the church gala... these were the off cuts of off cuts! The jewel tones, in 3 colour families, are perfect as "flowers and leaves" in this still life. Just had to add lots of French Knots. Finished as a mini quilt with a hanging sleeve with the ability to easily make it into a cushion if you wish. Hutt Art Class – Hungarian Christmas Baubles

Create colourful Christmas decorations based on Hungarian folk Embroidery. Fabric with the four design outlines will be provided as part of the class price. This design is based on traditional Knot Gardens. It is a pleasure to let the textures of the threads along with simple canvas work stitches give you a Rose Garden. Using the grid of the canvas and a clear chart will give you confidence to branch out from cross stitch. Hutt Art Class – Suzani Bird

Traditional Suzani Embroidery in Uzbekistan has flourished again since the fall of the Soviet Union. Taking inspirations from a contemporary Suzani, this bird with flowers and leaves has been reinterpreted using crewel embroidery stiches. In this class you will be taught these stitches through demonstration and have time in class to practise. There will be stitching at home. For beginner embroiders confident in threading a needle. The class price will include the design already printed on a linen/cotton fabric with a needle and detailed stitching instructions. Hutt Art Class – Wellington Houses on the Hills

Whether it is a street of funky Noddy style houses inspired by Wellington architect Roger Walker or traditional Villas on the green belt, come along and create your favourite hill view. You will use traditional English Paper piecing methods to 'build' the houses with surrounding trees. The trees and bush will be embellished with stitches to give a lushness to the view. Hutt Art Class -Strawberry Fields Forever Biscornu

A celebration of a strawberry patch with large juicy strawberries and the white flowers promising more to come. A Biscornu is a small ornamental pincushion. It has 8 sides and is usually secured in the centre of the top and the bottom to give a small depression. The work itself comes from the French, meaning something that has an irregular form with projections. You can stitch one panel, or if you complete the second panel, we will be joining them in the second class to form the biscornu. As a child, I loved finding this weed called Shepherds Purse because of the heart shaped seed pods. I now ask the question how many shepherds would you see carrying a heart shaped purse? Slow stitching - letting the fabric and thread lead the way. Applique, reverse applique and embroidery. Finished as a mini quilt mounted with buttons on a book cover. Stitch a Still Life Class

Create a still life of Vase with three dimensional flowers of about 40cm square. The background will be made up of different linen fabrics with Kantha stitching. This is an opportunity to use a range of different fabrics such as silk, velvet, linen, and other small pieces of special fabrics for the flowers and the vase. The effects of different textures to create a unique look will be demonstrate You will also learn some simple embroidery stitches. Each student should finish with a unique panel. Different finishing options - e.g. wall panel or cushions will be discussed in the class. For beginners - experienced stitchers (anyone who can thread a needle and would like to design their own piece of art). Fat quarters of linen / cotton and patchwork fabrics will be available to buy in class ($7 each). You will also have access to a variety of yarns and threads to try. Talk – Down the Garden Path: Inspiration – where do the ideas come from?

Sometimes there is a flash of an idea that results in a piece of design or an art work very quickly, but mostly it is a case of exploring and sampling ideas and themes until it clicks into place. Mary will show, with samples and pictures, some common themes that she returns to again and again for inspiration. Colour, textiles, plants and flowers, found objects and the influence of other artists. Then comes the creative fun of working on a piece until the magic moment of resolution. Unicorn Garden Party

Stitched Fragments Textile Work As I am clearing I am coming across little stitched fragments that just have to be incorporated into another work. This cross stitch unicorn was from a set of four designs inspired by medieval millefleur tapestry. These were stitched in 1989 on a trip to Canada. I loved the designs that after stitching the complete four I had to stitch another unicorn. The piece includes selvages torn from the edges of fabric to be made into curtains. The little gold leather flowers were cut from the leather of some worn out shoes that the puppy continued destroying. Slow stitching - letting the fabric and thread lead the way. What a Difference a Stitch Makes Class

Enhance your lovely fabrics by adding another layer of stitched wool. Mary will teach you a number of her favourite outline and fill embroidery stitches. She will also discuss different needles, and how to work with different fabrics for the best result. You will be provided with a printed stitch sampler on which to try out the stitches. This can then be constructed into a handy stitch dictionary and needle book. You are welcome to bring some of your own yarn and fabrics so we can discuss and sample some creative ways to stitch.
