Benton & Johnson Japan Copper T70, T71 and T72
Japanese thread is a goldwork thread made of a cotton core wrapped with a strip of metal foil. This means that is is quite soft and easy to manipulate while stitching and has a lovely shine.
‘Japanese thread’ is used widely in goldwork all over the world, notably China, India and Britain as well as Japan. Like all our metal threads, it is made by Benton and Johnson in the UK.
Use Japanese thread by couching over it (usually in pairs for a smooth line, but singly if you prefer). Use either a matching or contrasting sewing thread with a coating of beeswax.
In this range the colours are burnished which have a matte surface and an antique appearance. The Japanese threads are synthetic and will not tarnish.
Imitation Japanese Threads in this range are available from No. 8 (K4) which is the smallest to No. 13 (K1) which is the largest.
Imitation Japanese Threads range from T69 which is the largest to T72 which is the smallest.
T72: Approximately 0.15mm across the width of the thread.
T71: Approximately 0.25mm across the width of the thread.
T70: Approximately 0.5mm accross the width of the thread.
T69: Approximately 0.75mm accross the width of the thread.

Bright check purl is a metal used for goldwork embroidery. It has a lovely sparkle and will enhance any piece of embroidery. Cut the metal into lengths and thread onto a sewing thread like a bead.

Benton & Johnson Gilt Rococo Fine
Gilt (gold-plated) rococo is a twisted thread for metalwork embroidery. It has a twisted fiber core with gilt filament wrapped around it in the opposite direction, resulting in a wavy appearance. The wave pattern is very even, making it possible to couch this thread in pairs or rows.

Rough Purls are a delicate wire thread tightly coiled into a soft, flexible hollow tube with a subtle matte finish. They add a unique finish and texture to goldwork embroidery.
These tubes are cut into small sections, or beads using a fine sharp embroidery scissors and stitched onto the fabric by threading through their hollow center. This keeps the stitching concealed. The purl beads or chips can be layered over felt or crochet cotton padding to create a raised, dimensional effect on the design.

Wire Check Purls are made up of a very fine wire thread that is wound around a soft flexible hollow tube with a serrated or jagged dull (matte) surface.
The Wire Check Purl is cut up into chips or tiny beads and couched down onto the fabric – passing the needle and thread through the middle of the chip so the thread is hidden. The chips or beads can be sewn over felt or crochet cotton padding to give the area dimension.
