Archey’s Frog is native to New Zealand and is found in a small area near Coromandel in the North Island. Native frogs are quite different to introduced species – they have no external eardrum, no webbing between their toes and the pupil of each eye is circular rather than a slit. The male of this species of frog raises the young. The Maori name for frog is Pepeke. Paddy was a ginger and brown Airedale terrier who became a waterfront identity in Wellington in the 1930s. As a familiar sight on the waterfront he was cared for by the watersiders, harbour board workers, seamen and taxi drivers; all of whom contributed towards his annual dog licence A memorial drinking fountain that included two drinking bowls for dogs was erected in Paddy’s honour in 1945 at the Queen’s Wharf gates.
